Combined with the clinical studies on the differentiation and treatment of ulcerative colitis(UC)with Traditional Chinese medicine in recent 10 years,this paper summarized UC from the etiology and pathogenesis,treatment principle,prescriptions of oral administration and enema. It is believed that UC is caused by the invasion of exogenous pathogens,emotional disorders,internal injury of improper diet and weakness of zangfu organs,etc.,and the pathogenesis includes:Deficient healthy qi of five zang-organs,pathogenic qi in the intestinal organs,combating with qi and blood,causing stagnation of qi and blood in the intestine,losing conduction function and damaging to the intestinal collateral. The main principles of treatment are as follows.(1)In the active stage,it is used to clear heat,cool blood and stop bleeding,remove decay and carbuncle,combined with healing up sore and promoting granulation;in the remission stage,it is used to regulate spleen and stomach,warm the middle to tonify deficiency,combined with clearing intestines and removing toxin.(2) Harmonize qi and blood,promote digestion and remove food stagnation.(3)Pay attention to protect the stomach qi. Commonly used prescriptions include:Shaoyao Powder(芍药散),Baitouweng Decoction (白头翁汤),Shenling Baizhu Powder(参苓白术散 ),Pain and Diarrhea Formula (痛泻要方),Sishen Pill (四神丸),Wumei Pill (乌梅丸).There are 32 references in total.
